Patients Coming Off Slimming Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals using such drugs should be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
